Watercolor has become my medium of choice. I like them for a variety of reasons: easy to set up, ease of clean-up, relatively low expense (in comparison to oils). They are easy to transport: It’s great to throw them into a pack along with a pad, some vials of water, a couple of brushes, and go tramp around NZ. Those are all pluses, but I would say the thing that appeals to me most about the medium is the vibrancy of color, and the ability to meld those colors seamlessly. The fact that they are also a notoriously difficult and temperamental medium that few people can handle also adds to it.
It is a challenging medium that places a lot of emphasis on the ability to draw. Once you have that sorted and begin working you have to paint and paint fast. There is some room for correction but for the most part there’s little margin for error. Generally speaking, you either get it the first time or you don’t get it at all. I find that exciting and daunting at the same time.
We’ve all got limited time these days. To make things easier I’ve broken my work up into a couple of categories. Just click on the links and you’re on your way.
