The same logic works for film. You may be a director with a heap of great ideas and inspiration, but the idea that you can create without cash is absurd. The only way to get a serious job in the industry is to prove you can make money, otherwise you won't get a second glance. Kurosawa may have made some amazing stuff, but that didn't stop the studios from pressuring him to make more films that bring in the big bucks. Add in the cost in creating films compared to other forms of artwork, and it's a wonder that there are still a few decent films being made when Transformers 3 or w/e will make so much more.

Whether we like it or not, art is a product. Mindlessly assuming otherwise is a pathway to failure.

Hi old buddy! I like this painting but of course I like all your work. I don't know what message you are trying to get across in this painting? The only thing I can come up with is, she has misplaced her purse or car keys? You spoke about painting the pearls, well, I counted 73 that I can see. 9 big ones separating rows of 7. I am almost blind now and have a headache! I still feel the necklace is the message here. She's dressed nice, always liked a lady in slacks or jeans, they always seem to know where they are going.
Unlike me, here! Anyway my friend keep painting. I miss your comments. Take care Bruce

Great thoughts!! However 1st: Twombly is a God. 2nd Johns is over-rated. SCHNABEL IS JUST AN ENTERTAINER not a painter. As I've grown as a painter I've come to understand Rothko more, and I'm starting to get what he does.Basquiat was an artist of his time,ie: the 80's. In time he will be judged accordingly. AS always your thoughts are welcomed. The fact that you can express your thoughts both in paint and in words is awesome. Keep up the good work(word).

I think we are all born happy in the beginning, then life gives us a smack of reality. We can't be happy all the time.
Looking back over the last 64 yrs, I try to think of when I was the happiest and I have discovered it was when I was a child.
Meeting the first women, I fell in love with.
Hearing my children laugh.
I stopped measuring my happiness by other peoples success . Life's too short to set too many goals. You can only spread yourself so far.
"Make one person happy everyday, even if it is yourself. BT

I enjoyed your Blog, looking forward to , Part 2 Thanks

Ed,

Why your work isn't well known is certainly beyond me. It has far more substance than a high percentage of the mediocrity I see passing these days as solid painting.

I agree completely with your post. To make work while taking into consideration anything other than the thing itself is a never-ending cycle that just encourages self-doubt.

You speak the truth, you need to email this to all kids at RISD. I also believe that if you make work to sell your work will fail. You must create what you want, knowing it may never make money. When I take the idea of "money or galleries, shows, fame etc. out of my thoughts I find I can concentrate better on my work. This is difficult and takes discipline but it is more rewarding and the work is more honest.

I remember the circus. Your reflections on this are profound in their simplicity: The danger of placing too much emphasis on how others may perceive us and giving too much consideration to what they may think of how we live our lives. I try to live with this in my heart everyday -- while balancing the need to be mindful of the emotions and needs of those our lives touch and influence.

I'm glad you posted this.
